Dear fellow Kansas Citians:

On THIS Thursday’s Council docket is a proposed ordinance No. 210463 that would allow the creation and placement of “Temporary Government Sponsored Shelters” — semi-permanent camps for hundreds of the homeless population — on ANY city-owned or City-leased property – without regard for the residential or business zoning immediately adjacent.

Using the same obscure ordinance that authorizes weekend garage sales it would authorize the placement of these camps for up to ONE YEAR SOLELY by the action of  City staff – with NO COUNCIL OVERSIGHT, and only 30-day “courtesy notice” to neighboring homes and businesses – but with NO APPEAL PROCESS.

I am concerned about the plight of those who are deprived of housing, but I am also concerned that this Ordinance is the wrong approach.  By granting unlimited and unappealable power to staff in the selection of locations for camps that could house hundreds of persons -– without regard to the impact of such sites on our residential zoning and our businesses – we risk serious consequences to our individual property values and our economy.

PLEASE CALL OR EMAIL YOUR COUNCILMEMBER IMMEDIATELY TO EXPRESS YOUR OPPOSITION TO THIS FLAWED ORDINANCE #210463!  YOU MAY ALSO WISH TO COME TO THE 26TH FLOOR OF CITY HALL AT 3 PM ON THURSDAY TO DEMONSTRATE YOUR OPPOSITION.

  1. South Kansas City, MO is generally a low income, HIGH CRIME area already. We do not want homeless villages set up in our communities and implore you to not do so.

  3. We must solve the houseless problem. How we do that seems to be the issue. With proper wrap around services and security some problems can be avoided. If we all work together we can provide for our houseless community. Together we can build bridges of exchange that will help us to be more effective in providing programs and services.

  4. Property Owners already work hard to keep their properties safe, don’t make us work harder. Homeless people has a lot of different emotional issues, and should be getting help in specific areas. There should be some abandoned buildings you can utilize to start outreach programs for the homeless issues. where everything can centrally located, without venturing out to look for housing., so they can benefit in their own community. Please do not pass # 210463

  5. This ordinance is an attempt to force this on us with out an opportunity to voice our input or concerns. I leaves one person with too much unchecked authority to implement the program. This will have serious consequences on individual property values.

  6. Every time the city wants to solve a problem that nobody wants anything to do with, South Kansas City is their answer. There’s more than enough crime, & blight here without the city’s help. How about housing these people in the more affluent neighborhoods of Kansas City. I’m sure they would welcome them with open arms. How about each council member adopt 3 or 4 homeless families to live with them in their home, or homes, or properties, with free access to all their belongings. After all the city/Taxpayers will foot the bill for their room & board. just a suggestion, as I hear there ill be no public input on this matter, as well there shouldn’t be when are mere peons governed by the elite few, that care nothing about the tax paying constituents, until election time. How about showing leadership by example, once, & give them residence in your neighborhoods. I know not every council member lives in a high crime area, but this is for the members that don’t

  7. Are city Parks to be used? I hope not.
Can I buy a Land Bank property if it is a housing camp?
Elected officials have to be accountable for where the “camps” are located. Not unelected city workers.

  9. These camps will have a negative affect on real estate values and people with mortgages could find themselves with negative equity. The decision on location of these camps without voter input.

  10. We strongly object to your proposal to create a homeless camp without having the input of the homeowners in the city. We do not want our neighborhoods to turn into tent cities like those in California, and North Carolina and DC where crime is high, and is VERY unsanitary and have become rat infested. Please do your homework and see what has happened in other states where they have tried this crazy idea. Now they have an even worse problem than before. Please listen to your property owners and citizens to get a better solution. Thank you so much.
